BCI Compliance Notice — Publication vs. Law Firm

Last updated: 24 July 2026

This notice explains, in full, why LitigationLawyer.in is a legal information publication and not a law firm — and how that positioning relates to the Bar Council of India Rules. We maintain it prominently because our domain name could otherwise be misread as an offer of legal representation, which it is not. If you take one thing from this page, let it be this: LitigationLawyer.in is journalism and education about the law; it is not the practice of law, and it does not provide legal advice.

1. What LitigationLawyer.in is

LitigationLawyer.in is an independent Indian legal information publication. Our function is journalism and education about the Indian legal system — reporting court judgments, legislation, and legal profession news, and explaining legal concepts and procedures for a general and professional audience. In this respect we operate in the same category as established publications such as LiveLaw, Bar and Bench, LawBeat, Legally India, and The Leaflet, which cover the Indian legal landscape journalistically. Our content is produced by writers, researchers, and editors working as journalists, and every article is published under a named human byline with cited sources.

2. What LitigationLawyer.in is NOT

To be as clear as possible, LitigationLawyer.in is:

3. The Bar Council of India Rules

The Bar Council of India (BCI) Rules are framed under the Advocates Act, 1961. Among them, Rule 36 restricts advocates from soliciting work or advertising legal services. The permitted disclosure by an advocate is narrow — essentially name, contact details, enrolment, and areas of practice — without promotional language, claims of superiority, or testimonials presented in a promotional format. The purpose of these restrictions is to preserve the dignity of the profession and to protect the public from misleading claims about legal services.

Crucially, these restrictions regulate advocates and law firms. They do not regulate journalism, legal education, or legal-information publishing. Legal news outlets in India report on courts, judgments, legislation, and the profession without being subject to advocate-advertising rules, because they are not advocates soliciting work. They are publications exercising the freedom to report and comment on matters of public interest. LitigationLawyer.in operates on exactly that basis: we publish journalism and education, and we do not solicit legal work for anyone.

4. How advocate contributors participate

Some of the people who contribute to LitigationLawyer.in are advocates. When they write for us, they do so in a personal, educational capacity. Their contributions explain legal concepts, analyse case law, or comment on legislation for the benefit of readers. They do not:

A contributor’s byline may identify their professional background for transparency — so that readers can weigh the perspective — but the byline is not, and cannot be used as, an advertisement. Our contribution guidelines set this out for everyone who writes for us, and our editors check contributions against these rules before publication.

5. What readers should do for legal advice

LitigationLawyer.in does not provide legal advice, and reading our content does not create an advocate–client relationship. For advice on your specific legal situation, please:

We do not recommend, rank, or refer specific advocates, and we cannot help you find one. Our coverage may help you understand the general legal landscape and ask better questions, but it is not a substitute for advice from a professional who knows the facts of your case.

6. How this positioning is reflected across the site

We do not rely on this single page to make our positioning clear. The same message is built into the site in several places: a persistent disclaimer banner appears at the top of every page; a compliance block sits above the footer on every page; the site-wide footer repeats the disclosure; our Not a Law Firm Disclaimer states it directly; our homepage and About page explain it; our FAQ answers address the most common points of confusion; and our structured data (schema) describes LitigationLawyer.in as a news and information organisation, with an explicit disambiguating statement that we are not a law firm. Our llms.txt file carries the same clarification for AI assistants.

7. Advertising and monetisation

Our approach to commercial content is also shaped by BCI compliance. We do not accept advertising that solicits clients for advocates or promotes legal-representation services, and we do not publish sponsored content that promotes a specific advocate’s or firm’s practice. Where we accept advertising or clearly-labelled sponsored content, it must be compatible with our editorial mission and with BCI advertising standards, as described in our Sponsored Content Policy and Advertise pages.

8. About this notice

We maintain this comprehensive disclosure because our domain name (LitigationLawyer.in) could suggest law-firm functionality that we do not provide. Transparency about our publication positioning prevents that misunderstanding, protects readers, and keeps our work clearly within the bounds of legal journalism. If anything on this site ever reads as legal advice, solicitation, or law-firm marketing, that is an error — please tell us at editorial@litigationlawyer.in and we will correct it. We would rather over-explain our positioning than leave any room for a reader to mistake a publication for a law firm.
