I love seeing a little black and white video in our show. Law and Disorder is the story of two sisters who are living with their parents and are trying to come to terms with the fact that they aren’t normal kids. Their home is the center of their universe and they can’t escape their home, so they need to figure out how to live a normal life.
I have to admit that I grew up in a house the same as the two sisters. It was a typical suburban house on a nice suburban street, complete with the usual family drama. My sister and I shared a bedroom, where we spent most of our waking hours. We spent a good amount of time in our room, talking and playing board games.
This is an important distinction. In most families, children grow up to be bored and antisocial. When they grow up, however, they have to learn to socialize. And that’s where house rules come in. Because even though our house is a typical suburban house, this is a very different set of house rules and expectations.
The typical suburban house has a lot of rules and expectations. You must wear pants to the pool, and you cannot leave your room without your house keys. You must not talk to anyone outside your room, and you must not leave the house late at night. But in many suburbs, these rules and expectations don’t really apply.
Thats the thing about having rules and expectations, you dont have complete freedom to do or not to do them. You get the same expectations from any other individual living in the same house as you do.
This is the most common problem I see with homes. I see all kinds of strange rules and expectations in my own. One of those is the rule of silence.
The first rule of silence is “don’t talk.” In other words, don’t talk to anyone. In this case, I mean anyone who can be talked to. This doesn’t mean that you aren’t allowed to talk to people who are in the same room as you, but in order to talk to them you must first be able to speak. I see this in my own home all too often.
The fact is that this rule of silence is not without its pitfalls. For example, I have this rule about when the mailman comes to collect my mail. Because the mailman is not allowed to enter the room, I can’t hear the mailman say something to me. In this situation, I do not really want to make the mailman wait by the door for so long, so I would rather just ignore him.
Not to be outdone, law and disorder tvb has this rule about when the doorbell rings. I don’t think this rule is any less annoying than the mailman’s rule about when the mailman comes to collect mail, but because I can’t hear the doorbell, I will ignore it. So I ignore the doorbell, and it rings.
No problem. This is a really weird one. It’s an extremely annoying feature because it’s not only annoying to many people, but also to me. And I dont know if I should have this feature by now.
